about

Shackles is a song that depicts the mental journey of a protagonist in a story about reality. Faced with the results of a society that was built on greed, corruption, and lies, the protagonist wondered what his role was in this world. He contemplated the struggles of making a change by seeking advice about the faiths of those who had tried to make a change before him. Being fully informed about their faiths, he ventures forward to attempt what has been unsuccessful thus far, and just like the legends before him, he did not return.

This song was written from two perspectives by KAR33M & Idris Lawal. Idris presented concrete examples of the unfortunate events taking place in the story while KAR33M narrated from both a third-person point of view watching this story of the protagonist take place, as well as from the first-person point of view when the protagonist attempted to find the solution to the
problems faced by the society he is living in.

“As an artist, I believe one of the best ways to write music is by expressing what is true to you from the life you live and the lessons you learn. This song is my attempt at expressing the mental journey that the great activists of the world would go through while on their way to liberate their people. Almost taking a deep dive into the minds of people like Fela Kuti and Malcolm X, both great people who stood for something greater than themselves. This was my attempt at trying to humanize them and understand the sacrifices that they
had to make to help bring their people forward in society.” - KAR33M
The song was written by KAR33M In collaboration with IDRIS Lawal and produced by the resident producer and engineer at Woke Studios, Adrian De La Puente a.k.a
Delaad. The beat was created by Ramoon.

lyrics

[Verse 1] *Idris Lawal*

Lately, I have been in my feelings by my own
Raping, killings while police is on patrol
I no know, I no know who to blame
Ole Olopa be the same for my country oh (for my country oh)
I no know, I no know oh

[Hook] *KAR33M*
Got no hope
Got no hope
Got no place to be

Got no hope
Got no hope
Got no place to breathe

[Verse 2] *Idris Lawal*

Thought the president was democracy
But the president them de crazy
So we depressed, know no more disgrace oh for my country oh
I thought the president was democracy
But the president them de crazy
So we depressed, know no more disgrace oh for my country oh

*KAR33M*

Look, truly seeking change in a land where no one stays
Legends who have tried before you are left in the grave
It’s a puzzle in a box put away with 4 locks, hidden in Fort Knox, that’s the answers to your prayers
Working hard to eat
Working hard to breathe
The things they don’t see, got me feeling like a slave

[Hook] *KAR33M*
Got no hope
Got no hope
Got no place to be

Got no hope
Got no hope
Got no place to breathe

[Bridge] *KAR33M*

So I put on a brave face, time to be a legend at birthplace
Then I pack up my bags and I head up the street, tell my people no shaking
Leave my family behind, tell my lover I’m fine and I’ll be back on a Tuesday
Got the prison in sight, got the shooters on stand by, it’s gonna be a good day
Made it all the way inside, got the answers in my hand, said I’ll be back on a Tuesday.

[Interlude] *KAR33M*
Gone is the son of the world who dared to dream
Gone is a soul burden with the troubles of the world
To rest with legends who know no age, no death, but peace
Carved in stone their glory draws a path to the missing pieces
In hopes that you find them
And choose wisely

[Bridge cont] *KAR33M*
Fuck, your Tuesday!

[Hook]

Got no hope
Got no hope
Got no place to be

Got no hope
Got no hope
Got no place to breathe
